“CHILI FINGER is more than just a crime-driven dark comedy. It reflects how the truest of stories can make for compelling films.”

Before getting into just how good the new movie CHILI FINGER is, let me ask you something—do you remember that mid-2000s news story about the woman who claimed she found a finger in her Wendy’s chili? And those friendly, almost too wholesome commercials featuring founder Dave Thomas? Now what if that story didn’t just happen but spiraled into something far more chaotic? That’s the twisted foundation of CHILI FINGER, a comedy-thriller starring John Goodman and Bryan Cranston that premiered at SXSW 2026. It takes a bizarre piece of real-life history and pushes it into something darker, funnier, and far more unhinged than you’d expect.

The film follows Jessica Lipki (Judy Greer), a mother entering her empty nester era, dealing with the struggles of her daughter going off to college in Philadelphia. Her husband Ron (Sean Astin) is kind and patient, if not oblivious to her issues, while appreciating the simple things in life. During a lunch outing, she experiences a horrific moment while taking in a spoonful of chili. And to quote Jessica, “There’s a f***ing finger in my chili!” This singular moment erupts into a web of blackmail, suspicion, deceit, distrust, and a number of unfortunate events akin to a Coen Brothers movie.

Judy Greer’s performance is a highlight. Reflecting the struggles of motherhood at a time where your kids have grown up, a void is felt, one which leads to questioning whether motherhood has a rewarding nature. Greer commits to the themes around her character, and she makes it easy for the audience to connect to what her performance seeks to express. You laugh with her, cry with her, feel her anxieties and ultimately find sympathetic qualities within her character, despite her very human flaws.

John Goodman’s character of Blake Junior offers a balance he has come to master. Being charismatic and charming in one moment and then menacing in another, when it is called for. Blake Junior is a man of intelligent observation. He is quickly aware that Jessica’s discovery of the finger is most likely a con. He takes matters into his own hands to find the truth. Enter Bryan Cranston as Dave, another memorable performance from an impeccable talent. He acts as Junior’s muscle of sorts—a retired vet sent to investigate the potential scam and, in the process, gives this film some truly humorous and satirical moments.

CHILI FINGERis more than just a crime-driven dark comedy. It reflects how the truest of stories can make for compelling films. Details get shifted and liberties are obviously taken, but that is exactly what this film intends to do—take the core of a crazy story and craft an outrageously entertaining film. Aside from the entertainment value, there are aspects that serve to move you as a viewer.

One of the best decisions this film makes is to give a focus to strong female characters. Greer reflects the struggles of motherhood, coming to terms with the fact that her only child is no longer a child, and adapting to entering her own life apart from her parents, who have been around since birth. Madeline Wise’s performance as Goodman’s daughter showcases a strong-minded woman looking to preserve and expand on her father’s fast-food empire. She adapts to many of his strengths and even stands up to him when she questions his methods. She stands her ground, much to her father’s chagrin. At its core, it looks at the extensive lengths people will go to out of economic desperation.

CHILI FINGERexists outside of the common norms and cliches of its subgenre. This film has all the potential to gain a dedicated following that could see merch around the fast-food world in which it exists. It is another film people will certainly talk about by asking folks if they remember the “finger in the chili story”, and why they should see this entertaining film based on it. Following its premiere at SXSW, CHILI FINGERis currently seeking distribution and it is one you should absolutely put on your radar.
