HBO’s Harry Potter TV series has found its golden trio: Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout rounds out the trio as Ron Weasley. All three young actors are newcomers to Hollywood, stepping into some of the most iconic roles in modern fantasy.
In the original films, the characters were portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Those eight blockbuster movies, based on J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series (with the final book split into two films), turned the trio into global stars and spawned a multi-billion-dollar franchise. There was also a three-film Fantastic Beasts spinoff, because wizarding world content, like Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, is apparently endless.
Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod (who will helm multiple episodes) said in a joint statement:
“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”
Tens of thousands of kids reportedly auditioned for the coveted roles, following HBO’s very public open casting call. The series—still untitled, despite being very much Harry Potter—will be a “faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books,” according to HBO. It will stream on HBO Max (formerly known as Max, and formerly formerly known as HBO Max—it’s been through things).
Produced in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, the series begins production this summer for a 2026 premiere.
