OUT OF DARKNESS emerges as not just a film but a profound journey that delves deep into ancient times to explore the intricate dance between fear and survival. It skillfully crafts a narrative that reflects on how our deepest fears can obscure the more significant dangers hidden in the shadows.

From the beginning, this cinematic ride promised a gripping tale, captivating me with its rich premise of a diverse group in search of a new beginning. Their quest for shelter in the caves of distant mountains quickly turns into a struggle for survival against unseen threats. It’s the courage of a young woman that becomes the beacon, illuminating the dark choices they face.

The film succeeds in creating an incredibly immersive world. Early scenes carefully lay the groundwork, allowing us to walk alongside the characters, feeling their dread and hope with every single step.  Andrew Cumming’s directorial genius is clear within his creative use of shadows and sounds, which  transforms the vast wilderness into an oppressive force that heightens the film’s tension.

Performances across the board add layers of authenticity, particularly the portrayal of the young woman by Safia Oakley-Green, whose resolve uncovers the lengths to which humanity will go to survive. I found myself deeply engaged with each of the characters’ narratives, a testament to the amazing work done by the cast to bring characters’ diverse personalities to life.

Yet, as the story transitions into its climax, the unveiling of the mystery somewhat diminishes the initial suspense constructed around the unknown. This shift, while revealing, slightly muddles the film’s earlier, more intense tension. Nevertheless, it opens a pathway to an even richer examination of fear — not merely as a response to external darkness but as a mirror reflecting our own internal shadows.

OUT OF DARKNESS challenges viewers to confront not only the concept of fear but also the nature of humanity’s survival instincts. It suggests that the real monsters may not hide in the shadows but within us, shaped by our decisions in the face of adversity.

Despite a few narrative stumbles, the film remains a compelling watch, weaving technical skill with emotional depth to engage the audience. While it may not revolutionize the horror genre, it offers a thought-provoking reflection on the monsters that surround us and those that lurk within us. OUT OF DARKNESS stands as a testament to the resilient and enduring nature of the human spirit, making it an absolute must-see for audiences that enjoy narratives that confront the darkness to uncover the light within. Will you dare to journey out of the darkness?
